Repeated measurements may be affected by changes in how data are collected, changes in participants’ circumstances, or participants becoming familiar with the study. Repeated participation itself may also influence how participants respond over time, sometimes called panel conditioning.
Because these studies are typically observational, other factors may also influence the relationships researchers observe, making it difficult to establish cause and effect.
