How to use Skills

Written by Allison Elechko

Skills are ready-to-run research workflows for common research tasks in Consensus.

Instead of writing a detailed prompt for every step, you can choose a Skill, describe your task in plain language, and Consensus will run the workflow using Deep. Skills can help you review a field, follow citations, find evidence for a claim, or check whether citations in a draft support the claims they are attached to.

How to run a Skill

  1. Start a new search here

  2. Click the Skills dropdown

  3. Choose the Skill you want to use

  4. Enter the required input, such as a research question, claim, starting paper, or draft section

  5. Run the search

Available Skills

📄 Literature Review: Start with a research question and get a structured overview. Consensus runs up to 20 searches in parallel, reads up to 100 papers, and follows citations to build the review.

🔗 Citation Snowballing: Provide a starting paper and explore the work around it, including the papers it references and the newer papers that cite it. Use it to expand your reading list or follow how a line of research has developed.

🔎 Reverse Citation Search: Provide a claim that needs a source. Consensus finds relevant research so you can assess whether the evidence supports the claim, challenges it, or suggests it needs to be qualified.

✅ Verify Citations: Provide a section of your draft with citations. Consensus checks whether each source supports the claim it is attached to, contradicts it, or does not address it, then shows the passage behind the assessment.

Tips for using Skills

For best results:

  • Choose the Skill that matches the task you want to complete

  • Be specific about your research question, claim, paper, or draft section

  • Use a starting paper for Citation Snowballing

  • Use a focused section of writing for Verify Citations

  • Review the cited papers and passages before using the output in your own work

Skills are designed to help you search, screen, and verify research faster, but they do not replace reading and evaluating the papers yourself. Use the output as a starting point, then review the supporting evidence in context.

Skills use Deep credits

Skills run using Deep, Consensus’s mode for multi-step research.

This means each Skill uses a Deep credit. If you do not have Deep credits available, you may need to wait until your credits reset or upgrade your plan before running a Skill.
